Packing up the car |
This racecourse has soundly beaten me twice in the past
After yesterday:
Pre race |
Florida Challenge Triathlon - 3
MC - 0
Swim: DFL in my AG almost DFL O/A
Tranistion spot |
Bike: went all Leroy Jenkins on the bike course… partially out of anger/embarrassment at my swim time
Run: started well enough with a couple of 8:30s but overheated and went downhill from there… after mile 11 taking me almost 20 minutes to complete I dropped at the aid station.
Yep, that’s right I DNFed with less than 2 miles to go.
Could I have finished? Yes
Could I have pulled myself and my stuff together to make the 3 hour trip home after spending the better part of another hour in the 95F blazing sunshine… probably not
I’ll be back in October for the full… hopefully I can learn to swim, hydrate, electrolyte balance, fuel, and pace myself over the next 4 months
temp per my car as I drove home |

Crap!!! I wish I would have known you were out there too! I did the short course (oly) but I totally would have drug you to the finish. It was BRUTAL out there. I almost DNFd on the bike. Sheesh! That is a tough, hot course for sure. I doubt I would have finished the half IM. GREAT job just getting out there. You'll take it down next year!!!
As much as it sucked and as much as you probably have though about whether or not you made the right choice or not, in the long run, it will probably be the right decision, sometimes pulling the plug insures you can race another day
Heat management is always a big unknown on race day and sometimes it works out and others it doesn't. Only way to get it right is to keep on practicing till you figure it out. Time to start with a clean slate and use the lessons you learned to ger 'er done!
98* is pretty hot for a race. I think you made a good call. Enjoy your rest and recovery.
October....its ON and its ALL YOU!
D
you might need to start training in a sauna! damn that sounds brutal!
It takes a special kind of crazy to do a half Ironman in Florida this time of year. Sounds to me like you left it all out there on the course, and nobody asks for more than that....
Sorry I missed you BoB... glad you had a good day out there... and thanks to you all for the feedback and well wishes. I'm ready to get back to traiing for the full
great job listening to your body
I also did this 70.3 and it was REALLY hot. I was a REALLY hard race.
